The Babes in the Wood - Ruth Rendell: ... English books are a rare beast in my neck of the woods (Switzerland), so weekends will usually find me grubbing around in piles of tatty paperbacks in our local second hand shops. I usually come away with a handful or two, but last week was a particularly poor showing so when I finally spotted this at the bottom of a box, I grabbed it and made my happy way to the till clutching my one franc piece (about 40p). I...

sunmeilan A Sight for Sore Eyes - Ruth Rendell
... ve been a fan of Ruth Rendell for some time now, but I am well aware that although most of her books are excellent, some of them are real duds. I tend to be particularly suspicious of the non-Inspector Wexford books. The last one I read, Rottweiler, was so bad I nearly gave it up half way through (which bearing in mind my threshold for rubbish is pretty amazing). This one, thankfully, is one of her better books. The story revolves around Teddy, brought up in a family that showed no love and Francine, whose mother was murdered while she, a child at the time, was in the house. Teddy is unable to express any feelings; he despises most people who try to get close to him, b...

... s well known today that with x-rays we can see beneath the surface of old paintings and find out what previous material existed on the canvas, a "shadow painting", perhaps, or the sketches the artist made, the false starts, the wrong turnings, the people who were painted over, or painted out. In some cases, we can see how the conception of a work has changed in the artist s mind over months or years, giving us a glimpse of the artistic process. What is less well known is that something like this exists in literature. The University of Texas, and other rich institutions in America where they teach "creative writing", will pay for the wrong turning...

... block of concrete is dropped from a bridge and hits the car in front of the one driven by Amber Marshalson. A passenger in the car is killed. Some weeks later Amber’s father finds his daughter bludgeoned to death after a night out and it’s obvious to the police that Amber was the real target in the earlier attack. Why would anyone be so determined to kill an eighteen–year-old single mother? Where did Amber get the thousand pounds which she has in her bag and why has she recently been to Frankfurt with an acquaintance who has disappeared? I’ve been a fan of Ruth Rendell’s Chief Inspector Wexford novels since they first appeared more than a quarter of a century ago. ...
