... self contained world that exhibits evidence of alien life. At first the icy interior of the cylindrical craft, appears to be completely sterile, but as it nears the sun, the craft starts to warm up and things soon start simmering below the surface. As is often the case, many of Clarke's imaginings are rooted in the scientific and technological facts of the period in which his book was written. This for many is what makes his work so thought provoking and stimulating to read. He also uses plenty of historical references...more

Arthur C. Clarke (16 December 1917 - 19 March 2008) was a British science fiction author, inventor, and futurist probably best remembered for the novel 2001: A Space Odyssey, written in collaboration with director Stanley Kubrick during the making of the film of the same name. He also participated in a number of television series in the 1980s, the most notable being Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World. Rendezvous with Rama was published in 1973 and at the time received much critical acclaim winning various literary awards including the Hugo, Jupiter and Nebula. When a huge meteor strikes Northern Italy in the 2077, the cities of Padua, Verona and Venice are ...  Read the complete review

Very Interesting (679 words)

A sci-fi fan's web page reccomended the Rama series, among many other books, as a classic of science fiction and while looking for anything interesting the local library I noticed this first book and the sequel. The first thought that came to mind, and the reason why I hired it out, was "very interesting," and that basically sums it up for me. Like many books and films, although certainly not all of them, I preferred the initial discovery and exploration of the enormous craft to the events that followed, which I found became tedious and long-winded sometimes. Once the initial mysteries were out of the way and people started 'flooding in,' ...  Read the complete review

In the 2077 the inevitable happened after many near misses an asteroid finally hits an inhabited area of the earth. In the hope that future strikes can be avoided Spaceguard is set up to detect and catalogue all the asteroids that pass through the solar system. Fifty years after its inception it proves its worth in an entirely different way when it detects what is assumed to be a giant 40 kilometre asteroid entering the solar system. Normally when asteroids are discovered they are given a name based on the year in which they are found but an asteroid of 31/439?s size deserves a name and that name is Rama. As the gargantuan rock heads ever closer to the sun it becomes ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Inside Out World (1973) (529 words)

Science-fiction writers are not renowned for their character development, and Arthur C. Clarke is no different - introducing characters as and when they are useful to the plot (even as late as chapter 36!) He does provide nuggets of background information about them, but the emphasis here is on action - into which the reader is plunged right from the outset. Following a massive meteorite strike on Italy which sinks Venice in the year 2077, an early warning system - Project Spaceguard - is instigated. Half a century later, Spaceguard detects a large fast-spinning object tearing towards the solar system. Named after the Hindu God Rama, it turns out ...  Read the complete review

I came to Arthur C. Clarke via the Odyssey series of books years ago, which were great reading. I'd overheard someone else mention that he'd written a book about these people who were exploring an alien spacecraft, and the idea intrigued me because I like those "exploring the unknown" type of things. A planetary catastrophe in the shape of a huge meteor strike in Europe in 2077 leads the planet to set up a space-based early warning system called Spaceguard to track all incoming objects. Half a century later, in the year 2130, a huge object, thought to be an asteroid is picked up by Spaceguard travelling through our solar system. As it is an ...  Read the complete review
