... depressed robot) and Trillion (a girl that Arthur Dent once totally failed to get off with). Douglas Adams' is more than a little partial to a complex narrative. If we were able to ask him to describe a "linear plot" he would probably reach for the dictionary. But this is, by no means, a failure of the book. Indeed, Adams' seems to delight in giving his reader something unexpected. His sharp wit and cleverly observed humour keep the reader absolutely engrossed and entertained. His characters are strong and the...more

Premium Review The Restaurant at the End of the Universe - Douglas Adams: Exploring Time, Space, Probability and Good Food (487 words)

"There is a theory that states that if anyone finds out why the Universe is here and what exactly it is for, it will replaced with something even more bizarre and inexplicable... there is another theory that this has already happens" Douglas Adams The Restaurant at the End of the Universe is (aside from the most elaborate venture in the history of catering) the second installment of Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker Trilogy (of five parts!) It follows the adventures of Arthur Dent (the most down-to-earth and lovably confused character to ever be found in a sci-fiction novel), Ford Prefect (an intrepid hitchhiker who is just a little loopy), Zaphod Beeblebrox ...  Read the complete review

Part two in the Hitchhiker’s guide, and possibly the worst (but definitely not a bad book), this continues on from the first novel. Again, most of this book appeared in the TV series so fans of that won’t encounter anything new, but it’s still a worthy read. Basically, the cast visits the Restaurant at the End of the Universe (as opposed to the Big Bang Burger Bar), which is held in a force bubble and allows the diners to view the End of the Universe from relative safety. Arthur doesn’t agree with the food and they all end up on prehistoric Earth with a bunch of telephone hygienists. Yes, I know that’s a very brief summary, but I ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Restaurant at the End of the Universe - Douglas Adams: Read it now! (198 words)

This is a very, very, very funny book. It continues at the point where The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy left off, with our main characters on their way to The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, an extremely up-market establishment, which crosses the end of time every night, for the entertainment of its customers. How Adams comes up with such ideas I have no idea, but it had me in stitches. Obviously I can't tell you too much about what happens, but the plot really is superbly contrived. The twists at the end are worthy of Roald Dahl. This is where the book differs from Hitchhiker's Guide. Whereas in the former book Adams seems to have simply ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review if the answers 42, what's the question? (481 words)

What to do after producing the cult book of the decade? An interesting dilemma faced by the late great Douglas Adams after writing The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and the only solution is to follow it up with more of the same. 1st impressions aren’t as startling as HGttG as the cover of my well thumbed 1st edition paperback is based on the TV series in that it looks like a starfish made of cheap fluorescent lighting on a black background. But sometimes you don’t buy the book for its cover as the wordy bit is far more interesting. The characters are again: - Arthur Dent – one of the only 2 survivors of the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Restaurant at the End of the Universe - Douglas Adams: Great Science fiction! (163 words)
by - written on 31/10/00 (Useful, 46 readings)
Rating:

This novel starts where the Hitch hikers Guide to the Galaxy stopped. The Restaurant at the End of the Universe is an exclusive place that offers its patrons a unique entertainment. Each evening it passes the end of time again! Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect and Zaphod Beeblebrox are the main characters (from the Hitch Hikers Guide). They are treated to this mind blowing experience. There are some very funny bits in this novel as well. The names of the characters give a clue there! This particular novel seems to be more structured than the previous one in the series. Douglas Adams writes as though he knows exactly what is going to happen in this one (unlike ...  Read the complete review

Funny and very clever, An entertaining and compelling story, Great characters Difficult to follow sometimesNeeds to be read in a short period of time, lest the reader forget everything

Well written Generally not quite as good as the first one

Nicely different, Arthur Dent receiving some good luck at last Different from what I would have hoped, but possibly better than if Adams had simply re-treaded old ground

Engaging, magic and generally thriling . . . you could get lost in it easily None to be honest

Barker in his element, Imaginative paintings/pictures, Children will enjoy it too Hard to consider truly original

Central premise actually good Filler novel, stupid side plot
