Carry on, Jeeves - P.G. Wodehouse
by andyk910 - written on 22/04/09 (Very useful, 110 readings)
Rating:
'Carry on, Jeeves' is regarded as the second of the Jeeves books written by P G Woodhouse ('The Inimitable Jeeves' is the first and there are 12 more afterwards) In paperback this is 272 pages long and is made up of 10 short stories, roughly the same length as one another and all originally published when written in the 1920's. A little over half the stories are set in England, centred on London (the rest in New York) and are comedies about the society life of a 'young gentleman' (aged about 25) who did not work, indeed did not need to work and largely spent his time in the company of other young men who did not work and all of whom lived on generous handouts from wealthy and ...

Rating:
The wonderful P G Wodehouse, who died in 1975 at the age of 93, wrote more than 70 novels over a period of more than 70 years – his last, Aunts Aren’t Gentlemen, was published when he was 92! He also wrote over 300 short stories and provided more than 200 lyrics for musical comedies. P. G. (his initials stand for Pelham Grenville, though he was known to his friends and relatives as Plum) had a long and interesting life which is detailed in Robert McCrum’s excellent 2004 biography, “Wodehouse: A Life”. Born in Guildford in 1881, he was educated at public school but sadly was unable to move on to university due to financial embarrassment on the part of his family. A ...

P.G. Wodehouse in general
by threadgill - written on 18/05/01 (Useful, 36 readings)
Rating:
The books of P.G Wodehouse are, in his own words, "musical comedies without music". They are light, frivolous and foolish. They will not help you deal with your life, but they give you a wonderful place to escape to. Porbably the most enjoyable are those featuring his enduring scenes and/or characters: the hapless Bertie Wooster and his masterful manservant Jeeves, the resourceful Psmith, the irrepressible Uncle Fred, Fifth Earl of Ickenham, and all the Blandings Castle gang, not least Lord Emsworth's prize pig, Empress of BLanings. Other "once-off" stories are equally delightful, Quick Service, Sam the Sudden, Hot Water, to name but three. The joy of ...
