Richard Russo writes warm, witty, dare I say it, feelgood novels. Damn, that makes him sound like they should be given away with Cosmo - try again. Imagine John Irving but slightly less weird. Or try Steven King if he forgot about the horror stuff and just stuck with chronicling small town America. RR likes to write about boys and their Dads. Boys growing up and Dads who didn't. I found this book in a charity shop, knew nothing about the author but the cover and title caught my eye, the synopsis seemed ok and a quick thumb suggested I'd get on with the style. Within a few weeks, I'd bought the other two novels he had available in Britain at full price (bit of a rarity for me), and worse still ordered his first novel from America because it was out of print here !
