Advantages: Excellent reference book. Well written

Disadvantages: Little bit pricey

C N Mindham`s fourth edition of his Roof construction and Loft conversion series is a definite must for carpenters and builders everywhere.

I bought the third edition about 4-5 years ago as I had a big and quite complex roof to do. It proved invaluable. While I had done lots of roofs before I wasn`t very good at reading technical drawings. The chapter on this really helped and, the next time I looked at the drawing it was a lot easier to understand. I could see how the roof was going to work in my head before actually working on it.

I should note I am reviewing the fourth edition as it is more up to date (regulations wise) and the loft conversion section has been extensively expanded. I do own this book aswell though.

This book provides a huge amount of information on all aspects of roofing. from installation methods, dormer windows and openings, different types of trusses and where to use right down to the history of roofing. I wont go into everything as there is too much, and you`ll get bored!!! i would recommend having a look at amazons "look inside" feature where you can see all the topics it covers.

The section on loft conversion is particularly interesting. I have seen so many conversions that are simply ruined by bad design and misuse of space. If your considering a loft conversion, this section will guide you into making good decisions about what you can do with your type of property and how feasible it is. This kind of information could save you thousands of pounds aswell as hassle.

Overall a brilliant book. C N Mindham really does know his stuff and it is well presented, easy to undersdand and tackles the more technical aspects of roofing. My knowledge of this subject has increased tenfold from reading it.

It is a bit pricey at £40, though you could probably pick one up off ebay for under £30. I would recommend it.

Summary: A worthy investment for people in the construction industry
