Advantages: Witty, amusing, with a suitably uplifting happy ending

Disadvantages: Are there any?

Forster's classic novel about a young girl's 'awakening' and her escape, as it were, from the social conventions that surround her is both witty and thoughtful. His writing style could never be condemned as being 'cliched' or 'uninteresting' - he writes with great variety and originality and draws humour from his characters beautifully.

The main characters are wonderfully written, and their development throughout the novel is a delight to watch. As well as this the novel contains a whole wealth of lesser characters who you either love, or love to hate. Mr Beebe, with his desire to please everybody, Miss Bartlett with her manipulative 'selflessness' and her obsession with what is 'proper', the exaggerated Miss Lavish.

The events fit together perfectly, and certain scenes are bordering on the divine, the romping 'Twelfth Chapter' for example, where three of the male characters choose to take a bathe in the pond and are discovered galumphing naked through the forest by Lucy and her mother - not only hilarious but also wonderfully life-affirming and uplifting.

Easy to read, full of witticisms and opportunities to laugh, this book is highly recommended to any reader.
