Advantages: Bright colourful illustrations and deals with a few mathematical concepts.

Disadvantages: None

I use this book to teach very young children the concept of numbers, number sets, addition & subtraction.
Stories are a fantastic basis for introducing or reinforcing counting and numbers as the children are so taken by the illustrations and the story in this particular book that they actually want to count the number of animals on each page, without realising that they are learning about numbers at the same time.

This is one of Carle's many brilliant books aimed at young children, some of his other works include:

The story
********
In short it's about a rooster that wants to travel around the world. After a short time he begins to feel lonely and when he meets 2 cats he asks them to join him. In turn the 3 animals then meet 3 frogs and invite them to join them on their travels so now there are 6 animals.......................and so on and so on. On the way they meet 4 turtles and 5 fish.
But as night draws in some of the animals begin to complain that they are cold, hungry and afraid.
The animals begin to leave the group, first the 5 fish, then the 4 turtles and so on until the rooster is left all alone again. He starts to feel homesick so goes back home where he goes to sleep and has a lovely dream about a trip around the world.

At the top of each page there is a bar chart as the animals join the rooster on the trip so that the total of animals on the trip can be counted as more and more join him. As they leave the group the bar chart becomes smaller.
This book is therefore an invaluable resource for helping with counting, adding and subtracting.

It also demonstrates that the rooster should have thought about food and shelter before embarking on his trip.

In true Carle style the illustrations are bright, vibrant and bold and the colourful collage style drawings help hold the children's attention.
