Advantages: Lots Going On, Great Ending

Disadvantages: Well It's No Masterpiece I Guess

Roses are Red by James Patterson is one of many books in his crime thriller series starring Detective Alex Cross. I really think you need to have read a few of the series before you read this book in fact because otherwise, you're expected to know a bit too much about the characters from the outset without being filled in at any time.

Naturally the book revolves Alex Cross on the trail of a sinister criminal (well he is a homicide detective after all). But there's so much more that goes on in this book which always makes for a good James Patterson read. There's loads going on in Alex's personal life for example and it's all intertwined with what's going on Alex's professional life.

This isn't so much one of those detective crime thrillers where loads of twists happen in the tale. It's more one of those books that includes a hundred and one mini stories inside of one big one. I think it makes for just as interesting a read as when you're racing through a book trying to work out the ending. You still race through this book, it's just that it's because there's so much going on you can't possibly put it down!

The ending is one of James Patterson's better ones too I have to say. He doesn't always get it right in these books, sometimes you can see what's coming a mile off. But I certainly didn't with this book and was pleasantly surprised when I came to the end and realised how he'd bought everything to a close. I thought it was quite clever actually which isn't a trait I always automatically associate with James Patterson.

I think this is a four star book and would recommend it to all. I don't think it appeals to any particular age or sex unlike some of his books and think that as long as you're in the mood for a story (rather than some great literary work) then this will be a book you just might enjoy.
