Advantages: Great for a young child
Disadvantages: Illustrations
Noah received this book in his book start pack that the health visitors gave him at his two year check.
It written by Pat Hutchins and was first published in 1968.
The book tells the story of Rosie the hen who decides to go for a little walk around the farmyard. As she takes her stroll she is totally unaware that a fox is stalking her. Unfortunately for the poor fox, the route that Rosie takes around the yard isn't very 'fox friendly'.
The illustrations in this book are very interesting in that they very basic but everything is coloured in green, yellow, orange or red. It's definitely a recognizable book that stands out on the shelf when I see it in the library but it doesn't appeal enough for me to pick it up.
The story is very simple and on every other page there are absolutely no words at all. I suppose this encourages the reader to talk about the book rather than be led by words. When there is text written on the page there are only three or four words so it's definitely suitable for the younger reader.
I have to say that this book has never appealed to me and I was a little disappointed when Noah pulled in out of his bag. I find the illustrations quite ghastly to look at and they almost make me feel sick when I look at them for too long! I thought the story was a little boring because there was no flow to it and I suppose it was a little young for Noah. Having said that it is quite funny to see the fox be beaten on every page.
Noah wasn't particularly struck by this one and he didn't even laugh when poor old fox got whacked in the face with a rake. He did sit through it a few times but I'm pretty sure this will be at the back of the book box before long.
Needless to say, I wouldn't recommend this book to a two year old as it's not very appealing to the eye and is too simple. However a younger child might enjoy it and it does come in a handy board version.
Summary: One of the worst childrens book around.
