Advantages: excellent for teaching prepositions
Disadvantages: a tinch dated
Rosie’s walk. Come for a walk with me and Rosie, Rosie is a red hen. This children’s book is written by Pat Hutchins published in August 1971; about the time I started my career in childcare. It is available in paperback and as a board book. This book has 32 pages and is aimed at pre or very early readers. The tale tells of Rosie chickens walk around a farmyard as a predatory fox follows her. Rosie does not seem to notice the fox .She goes on her walk oblivious of his presence. . Rosie walks around the pond and what happens to fox? He falls in it. Rosie walks past a rake what happens to Mr fox? He treads on the rake and it wacks him in the face poor Mr Fox Rosie walks over a haystack The last scene and Rosie walks under the beehives , what happens to fox he runs away with the bees chasing him and Rosie gets home just in time for tea unaware that the fox has been stalking her. This book has few words relying on the pictures to tell the story. The pictures are bold colourful pictures portraying the fox as very sly and Rosie oblivious to him watching her. This is a good book for teaching prepositions over under, around, behind. Children find it amusing to see the fox apparently unseen by Rosie the fox is not even mentioned in the text and watch the mishaps he has. They want to warn Rosie and see what befalls him on the next page it is exciting to see if he gets Rosie, fortunately he does not. This is a great book as the events are predictable ask your child what do you think will happen next and they will be able to work it out as the pictures really do tell the story Pre readers will see you read the words on the page and understand that the writing is words. This is a good book to read with your child explaining and pointing things out as you read the story After you have read the book you can play a game of going for a walk around the house, going under the table over the bed behind the settee
just like Rosie went around her farmyard home. Have fun enjoy reading with your children This book retails at £4.99 but I have seen it for lesss than that.

- 05/04/04 Sounds good for children. It seems such a simple idea to write a children's book but there are only so many that are really great. |
