Advantages: Original

Disadvantages: Bit dull

Tony Hawks (no, not the one with the skateboard, the one from red dwarf) is a very strange man.

Unless you accept that fact this book is sadly going to remain a mystery to you, as it is a book entirely based on the premise that Tony Hawks is a very strange man, and finds the idea of hitch-hiking with a fridge to be a lifetime goal, in much the same way as many more sane people would see swimming with dolphins.

Once you've got over the fact that he is hitching, round Ireland, with a fridge, the book settles down a bit, and is a bit dull in places.

Essentially this is a rather large, protracted pub crawl, whether this is because the idea appeals to the drunk, the half drunk, and the soon to be drunk, or whether it is because the Irish stereotypes are actually true I don't know, but I suspect the former.

It's not a bad book, but the journey it relates to was conducted in a vauge fog of Guinness, and it doesn't really stand up too well (I don't stand up too well after a few, so it's unfair to expect a book to!).

It all feels rather forced to be honest, and Hawks doesn't come across as particularly likeable, but rather nasty to a few of his lift givers.

But, that said.... if you do like the crazy bet genre, then this should have a place on your bookshelf, if only for doing it before Dave Gorman made crazy bets cool.

Summary: Not a bad book, just not a good one.

As the first of his "bet books" I rather enjoyed it - it was the later ones that became a bit formulaic
