Advantages: Funny, thought provoking and entertaining
Disadvantages: Might be a little long for some children
Rover is written by Michael Rosen and beautifully illustrated by Neal Layton. The book was published in 1999 by Bloomsbury publishing.
I'm probably no the first person to look at the front cover and title and assume this story is about a dog called Rover. It's not! The story is told through the eyes of a dog who owns a human being called Rover. The dog tells of all the things that we as humans participate in everyday but he explains it in the exact way that he perceives it.
This book takes reality and turns it on it's head in the most wonderful way. The book is witty and intelligent but its also extremely funny and thought provoking. The story made me smile from beginning to end and I actually didn't want it to end despite being aimed at young children.
The illustrations are brilliantly done and the characters are both endearing and friendly. They are all drawn in a very sketchy way and look as though they took no time at all but they aren't sloppy. The colours used are bright and vibrant which keeps the young listener or reader engaged and entertained.
I adored this story and loved the way that it messed with my head a little. It is a totally different book compared to 'Going on a bear hunt' which was also written by Rosen which is why I found it very surprising when I googled his name.
Noah really enjoyed this book although he appeared to be a little miffed at first about the role reversal, he finally got over that and had a few giggles with me.
This book is definitely worth a read because not only is it entertaining for a young child, it also makes you think about how animals perceive the world we live in. Does your dog really think that it owns you?
If you fancy reading it then it will cost you £5.99 brand new and I think it's well worth that!
Summary: Excellant!
