Advantages: Appeal to boys and girls alike

Disadvantages: book 5 is not yet out

JK Rowling is a single mum with a talent. Not many years ago she was struggling to bring up her daughter while writing a children’s book. Now she is a very rich woman with 4 books, which have been read by most of the children in this country and many adults as well.

JK Rowling’s books entered the world of children’s literature with something of a bang. Every one seemed to be talking about 'The Philosophers Stone' and praising it. I did not pay it much attention. Out came the next book 'The Chamber of Secret' and the buzz among my children’s friends, have you read it yet? I was starting to show and interest. By the time the forth book came out my children wanted to read them and I was getting interested.

I decided to buy the set of four books when I saw them in a local bookshop. When I took the books home it was Harry Potter mania every one wanted to read them. My daughter who loves reading and reads books by the gallon has raced through them. My son can think of better things to do than read but every evening in bed he reads these books. Even My husband and I have read them, and enjoyed them.

The Harry potter series is a set of children’s novels following the life of one Harry Potter as he starts at Wizard School. They are full-length novels which are full of action and adventure. They are the type of novel that is very hard to put down. They may be written for children but there is no shame in reading them as an adult. There are even Adult covers available with subtle black and white designs.

Harry Potter is an orphan who lives with is 'Muggle' Aunt and Uncle, the cruel relations. He has no idea that he is not a normal boy until he gets invited to attend a wizard school. Here he enters the world of wizards and Magic. Here he learns a new vocabulary 'Muggles' are non-Magic people like us. He finds himself in places that he never knew existed and with
people he finds he belongs with.

These books have been likened to the best parts of Enid Blyton and her school stories but with a much better style of writing. They are well written and interesting to read.

The best thing about these books is the ability to appeal to children who otherwise would not read, like my son. They appeal to both girls and boys equally and are good easy reading novels for adults too.

Now the film of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone is out! The stars are British and the hype is incredible. JK Rowling approved the production of the film and the stars. I hope this encourages more children to read the books.

Well done JK Rowling you will have helped a whole generation to read. When is the next book coming out?
