I’m so sorry this review has come too late for you to include this book in your Santa list. Because whether gardening is your job, your passion, your hobby, or just a passing interest in keeping your property respectable, this book has something for you. First and foremost it is a reference book. If you’re an enthusiast, you will actually sit down with it and read it. I do from time to time. But don’t use me as a yardstick. I can sit down with a map and read it like a novel. I may be a bit odd. No, it’s one of those books which is there when you need it. You think you know about garden plants? This will soon put paid to that idea! I had no idea how little I knew until I got this book. Each plant comes with ... Read the complete review

This mammoth book lists over 15,000 different plants. Listed by their botanical names, each plant entry includes all the cultivars, arranged again in alphabetical order. Additionally, plants are cross referenced under their more common names, so looking up Daffodil would send you to Narcissi. Each entry contains a brief description of the species, how many cultivars there are, how hardy they are and so on. Under each cultivar entry are the exact details of that plant, its leaf and flower characteristics, methods of propogation, prefered siting, and what ailments it is prone to. This is incredibly useful, especially after a spending spree at a garden centre. ... Read the complete review
