~ Ruby Flew Too ~
This is a lovely tale about a Mother duck and Father duck, Mother had laid five eggs and was sitting on them through day and night, and all sorts of weather, when one day they all began to hatch, It counts through one, two, three four eggs hatched, but the fifth hatches much later than the rest, The little chicks are called Rufus, Rory, Rosie and Rebecca, and when the last one is born she is named Ruby because she is much smaller and precious.
The other chicks all do things much faster than Ruby, like eating, and swimming and each time the Father duck said, Will she ever eat?, will she ever fly? And Mother duck always says "Yes, in her own time" and she always did. But when the other ducks began to fly, Ruby flew too, and whilst her sisters and brothers flew low, and amongst the trees, Ruby soared high and over the trees….and this time Mother duck's the one to ask "Will she ever come back?" and Father duck says "In her own time"
~ My verdict ~
This is a wonderful story which shows children that not everyone can do the same things at the same time, even if they are the same age, and that each of them will be able to achieve the same things eventually at their own pace!
There are quite a few talking points in the book,
~ Spring….when ducks lay eggs and chicks are born.
~ Baby animals….see how many animals the children can name and see if they can tell you the name of their babies.
~ Weather….there is a couple of weather changes in the book, so ideal if you're topic is weather at school/nursery.
~ You can ask the children if they can tell the difference between the female ducks and the male ducks……
~ Great for little ones to count to five too.
The pictures in this book are beautifully drawn by the illustrator Rebecca Harry.
Lots of brightly coloured pages to hold the children's attention.
~ The Author ~
Jonathan Emmett is a wonderful storyteller, he has written many other children's books including This way Ruby, Bringing down the Moon, and Pigs Might Fly to name a few.
He was born in Leicestershire in 1965 and now lives with his wife and children in Nottingham.
He is at the moment working on a novel about Pirates, I got all of this information from his own website, please let me know if you would like to know the website address!
There is also games and puzzles on the website and it is quite good fun for young children.
~ Other Info ~
I would recommend this book to children of about 2yrs old right up to about 7yrs old, and little readers will enjoy reading this too. My daughter can recognise a lot of the words and she's only 5 and my son often reads it to her (7 and a half)
