If you are a parent of a young child, this is probably all starting to sound a bit familiar and I guess that is what it's meant to do, because the book is really a series of negotiations about being well mannered but with a twist! The mule is acting as the child, and the child who is reading the book with you, through being directly addressed, is pretty much being placed in the role of the parent! This is rather a cute and unusual book written for small children and is definitely a must if you are having trouble instilling manners in your young child. Rude Mule is not so much a story but a series of 'what ifs' focusing on a small child and a hypothetical mule who might come visiting and behave in many unthinkable ways! The book starts with the words: 'What would you do if....?' and this phrase is repeated throughout the book. The first 'what would you do' is if a mule knocked on your door one day and announced he'd come for lunch! (Unlikely, I know, but then this is a children's book so anything can happen!)
