Ann Rule - the mistress of the true crime genre. (Ann Rule in general)
Member Name: nikkisly
Advantages: The best true crime writer ever? Disadvantages: I read faster than she writes.
Former Seattle policewoman turned crime journalist Ann Rule has to be the best true-crime writer I have ever read and, believe me, I've read hundreds. Her books take one of two formats. Some describe one crime (eg."Small Sacrifices" which is the chilling tale of the murder/attempted murder of three children and "If you Really Loved Me" which tells of a teenager who killed her step-mother).Others are "Crime Files" which describe two or three cases in each book. One of the strangest of her books, "The Stranger Beside Me" is written about the infamous serial killer Ted Bundy who, it transpired, just happened to be a personal friend of hers.Ms. Rule is well thought of in the USA and her former 'careers' give her unprecedented access to police and FBI files. Most of the books contain photographs - not too graphic, though! I understand that she has also written some fiction - I have not, as yet, read any of her fictional works, preferring non-fiction.Her style of writing is easy to read - so much so, that you have to keep reminding yourself that these are REAL people involved in REAL cases. That said, she handles personal tragedies sensitively and with respect for the victims and their families. If true crime is your thing, you really should try Ann Rule. My personal favourite is the above - mentioned "Small Sacrifices" but she has written many other books, including such titles as "Bitter Harvest", "Everything She Ever Wanted", "Dead By Sunset", "A Rose for her Grave - and other cases" and "You Belong to Me - and other cases".
