Advantages: thoroughly absorbing, darkly comic, believable

Disadvantages: none

I doubt that a more picaresque 'Catcher in the Rye' for the end of the twentieth century could e found. Russell Banks' young protagonist, Bone, rejects the suffocating comfort of his north American family home, instead immersing himself in the infinitely more interesting environment of marginalised America.

He eventually teams up with the Rastafarian "I-Man", following him to Jamaica. Here he experiences the ultimate in alternative lifestyles.

Full of dry, dark humour, this is a cracking story brilliantly narrated. The author's triumph is that, as fantastic as Bone's story is, you'll believe every word of it.

Ooh. I like the sound of that!

I think you're the master of the soundbite. I, on the other hand, am mistress of the endless waffle. Grin!
