Advantages: light read

Disadvantages: formulaic

If you've read any other Freya North before then this book probably isn't going to disappoint; in a nutshell it's slightly raunchy chick lit, sprinkled with touches of humour and with characters that appeal to the heart.

Stella is the recent divorcee who moves into the fictional small village of Long Dansbury with her young son and has a job being an estate agent for her uncle whilst her heart longs for the Art that is her calling. The scene is set for her to meet the charismatic Lady Lydia who has an estate, Longbridge Hall to sell and to bump into Xander who has a broken heart and a strong connection to the estate. What follows is a touching "will they? won't they?" tale in typical North style that is an entertaining and at times touching read.

I enjoyed this book for what it is, and it didn't take me particularly long to read it, always a good sign. I'm not sure though I'm not really sure why it is called "Rumours" as village life and the stately hall are the centre of this story and the title is just a bit misleading - perhaps chosen so it would fit in with other books by this author "Secrets"and "Chances", rather than for any meaningful connection with the actual plot. I felt that the characters were strong - Lady Lydia in particular was a convincing matriarch and Stella was likeable too. The book did feel just a little formulaic at times, however if you are looking for something light or like this author's books, like I do, that's no bad thing - knowing what to expect you can sit and enjoy the ride. Recommended.
