*** The Author *** John Mortimer has written many books about Rumpole of the Bailey. The early ones were adapted for television, but after Leo McKern who played the lead died, it was decided not to try to televise any more. Born in 1923, the author was a practising barrister at the Old Bailey, before leaving that profession to become a playwright and novelist, and has been Knighted for Services to the Arts. Among his works are three autobiographies Murders and Other Friends, Clinging to the Wreckage and Where There's a Will.
