Fourteen-year-old Nest Freemark has always known that she was different. Different in several ways: that she lives with her grandparents after her mother committed suicide, not knowing who her father is. That her best friend is a sylvan - a woodland elf-like creature, a few inches high, who rides around the park on an owl’s back. And that she can see the feeders in the park. Feeders are all teeth and yellow eyes, waiting to devour the negative emotions of humans - and quite possibly the humans themselves. Running with the Demon is the first book of Terry Brooks' "The Word and the Void" series. Telling the story of Nest Freemark whose life of magic takes a new twist on the arrival of two strangers in Hopewell, one a demon, the other a knight seeking to alter the fate of mankind Brooks' world of Hopewell and Sinnissippi Park is the beginning of another great series by the author of the Shannara series. Times like these call for a little bit of escapism, something to take you away from it all and descend into a world all of your own without these distractions. It was during one of these dreary moments when I came across what seemed the ultimate cure in my local WHSmith. In the book section ... Read the complete review

Terry Brooks is one of those authors (or people) who I have a dislike of for no real reason. I've not read any of his books although I once tried 'Magic Kingdom For Sale: Sold' but couldn't get into the flow of it but what really put me off was my dad. He read the first Shannara novel (I hope I've spelled that correctly) and maybe a few more and got fed up and left them and when he talked to me about them he said something along the lines of 'Terry Brooks couldn't have written these if 'The Lord of the Rings' hadn't been written a long enough time beforehand for a) Brooks to read it and b) people not to notice that Brooks was ...
