Advantages: gripping, strong plot, interesting characters
Disadvantages: Resembles an episode, not everybody's idea of a good read!!
Opening up the first page of yet another Sabrina book, I was excited to find out what magical adventure Id be embarking upon now. Would I be heading to the Other Realm? Or would I be whisked to America for a fulfilling and intense problematic tale? The wonders were merely a few words away...
So, who is Sabrina?
Sabrina, played by actress Melissa Joan Hart, is a teenage witch living in the mortal realm in America, initially with her two Aunts; Hilda and Zelda, and her pet cat Salem (whom was once a warlock sentenced to 100 years as a house pet for attempted world domination). Now, she attends Westbridge High with her friends Valeria and Harvey.
Sabrina the Teenage Witch was a hit TV series in the 90s, with a total of eight series aired. Although it is no longer in production, it is still popular. Each episode takes us on a fascinating journey into the young witch's life, where we see her attempt to cope with being both a witch and a teenager at the same time; a task that seems terrifying!
Plot
-----
This particular book is set in the mortal realm of America. Westbridge High school prom is coming up, which creates some trouble; head cheerleader Libby Chessler has taken over the committee and has made all the plans. This causes anger inside Sabrina, as she finds it unjust and unfair. On top of that, her Aunt Vesta plans to 'help' her choose her dress. Vesta may have a lot of style in the Other Realm, but not really the right mind for a smart school prom!
On top of that, problems are arising in the Spellman Household. Aunt Hilda is finally serving her two-week grounding her father set on her five-hundred years ago, which drives her to boredom - literally!
Everything seems totally unfair, especially when Sabrina finds out that Harvey's father is making him wear a powder blue 1970s tux to the prom! She decides there's only one thing left to do; consult the magic book! She brews up a jar of Fair Wind, and releases it inside Westbridge High...
The yellow wind whirls around the school, and to begin with, works like a dream. Libby decides to let others help with the planning committee, and the lunch lady offers to take food orders. Thrilled with the current success, Sabrina chooses to make the wind a little stronger, and used a duplicating spell.
When she returns to school the next day, Sabrina discovers that this extra-strong wind has done more damage than good, and 'fairness' is going out of control! Can she capture the speedy wind before things spiral even further?
About the collection
--------------------------
There are over fifty books in the Sabrina The Teenage Witch collection, written by a variety of authors. These books take us through Sabrina's life, from when she was sixteen and first discovered she was a witch, right up until her years at college. We meet a lot of her friends along the way, joining them on some magical adventures.
Book number 21, 'Prom Time', is written by couple Bobbi JG Weiss and David Cody Weiss. They have also written various other titles in the Sabrina collection, including 'Go Fetch' and 'Now and Again'. They've also written material for various other book collections, including Star Trek and Smallville.
Verdict...?
--------------
When I first started to read, I was hooked instantly. For some reason, I find the stories which are set in the mortal realm more fascinating than those based in the Other Realm. For some reason, I seemed to recall the plot, though I was certain I'd not read the book before. After thinking about it, I am certain that it has been adapted from an episode on television, as I can clearly see the story in my head, played out by the cast, though I fail to find it in any episode guides! So, given that, I shall not say the plot is unique!
However, the story is still strong and consistent, with vivid character descriptions and scene settings. It's one I would definitely recommend, as I found it both gripping and adventurous. Finding it difficult to put down, it's an appealing book, with a target audience of children, though I'm sure it would provide a fantastic light read for any adult too! Whether you have enjoyed the television series or not is not a problem; this fantastic book will keep you reading your way through the magical experience!
