Sabrina Spellman, played by actress Melissa Joan Hart in the television series, is a teenage witch living in the mortal realm in America, initially with her two Aunts; Hilda and Zelda, and her pet cat Salem (whom was once a warlock sentenced to 100 years as a house pet for attempted world domination). Sabrina the Teenage Witch was a hit TV series in the 90s, with a total of eight successful seasons. Although it is no longer in production, it is still incredibly popular. Each episode takes us on an incredible journey into the young witch's life, where we see her attempt to cope with being both a witch and a teenager at the same time.
With the series' a wide range of merchandise was released for its fans. Among the dolls and console games, a large amount of books could be fond, including the collection of novelizations. Book number #22 is 'Witchopoly'. Each book in the range has its own attractive cover and this one in particular can be recognised by its lovely pastel blue and violet shades. Around the edge there is a gorgeous glittery border and matching Sabrina logo. On the front you will see a picture of Melissa Joan Hart, the actress who plays Sabrina, and Sabrina's dad - Ted Spellman. As Ted was in very little of the Sabrina books, I had a feeling this was going to be a rare treat.
The plot itself tells us of another of Sabrina's antics. Sabrina buys her father a new board game for Fathers' Day: Witchopoly. The things that happen in the game happen in real life too and her father loses his magic, with Salem doubling his. They end up trapped with monsters luring, and it is up to Sabrina to save them, while trying to control Salem from taking over the world.
This is definitely an interesting plot. I adore Monopoly and would love an Other Realm version, and failing that at least one about Sabrina the Teenage Witch! Reading about the game is almost as fun as actually playing it! Also, this plot is more special as it is unique. Many of the stories resemble episodes from television a tad too much, but thankfully this one is completely its own.
The book is written by John Vornholt, who has also written other titles in the series including 'Haunts in the House' and 'Knock on Wood'. He has an amazing style which captures your attention straight away, so whenever I see his name on the cover of a Sabrina book, I always know I am in for a good read.
The series is aimed at children within the 8-13 age bracket. For those who fall into this, it will provide them with an interesting though slightly challenging read they're sure to enjoy. Though the writing is quite small across its 160 pages so it is not too good for the less confident reader. For the more mature reader however it will provide a perfect read which requires minimal thinking but is still very entertaining.
If you would like to buy this book, you are going to have to do so online. They disappeared from shops a few years after the series finished, but thankfully they are available all over the internet. You can purchase this for just 1p on Amazon.co.uk, and even with its £2.75 postage and packaging fee, that is still a wonderful price - much better than its £4.99 RRP!
'Witchopoly' is not only an attractive book which looks good on the shelf, but it is also an exciting option to read. The characters are so real and the plot is exciting. The descriptions themselves are so vivid that it allows you to feel like you are actually watching an episode of the show on television. Whether you are a fan of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, or are just looking for something a bit different, a bit magical, then this is most certainly one to go for.
