Sad Cypress - Agatha Christie ... of the murder of Mary Gerrard, her rival in love. The evidence was damning: only Elinor had the motive, the opportunity and the means to administer the fatal poison. Yet, inside the hostile courtroom, only one man still presumed Elinor was innocent until proven guilty: Hercule Poirot was all that stood between Elinor and the gallows.

However, it appears that the reader is being deliberately pushed towards the overwhelming consensus of Carlisle's guilt. Christie sets out a large part of her novel much as a statement of evidence. The events prior to the killing are laid before us in very precise and repetitive ways, in some ways creating the impression of a dry and lega...more

Premium Review Sad Cypress - Agatha Christie: A fishy case? (2755 words)
by - written on 17/06/09 (Very useful, 25 readings)
Rating:

Charged with the murder of Mary Gerrard, the case against Elinor Carlisle was particularly damning. Premium Review Sad Cypress - Agatha Christie: Vintage Christie (663 words)
by - written on 29/05/07 (Very useful, 82 readings)
Rating:

Agatha Christie is, of course, known to millions worldwide as the author of, ooh, loads of murder mysteries (66 full-length novels, plus a number of short-story collections and – under the name of Mary Westmacott – several romances). She’s perhaps known to even more through the popular film and TV adaptations of her work, particularly those starring Hercule Poirot (“My name is Hercule Poirot and I am probably the greatest detective in the world”) and Miss Marple (or “Marple” as she is rather disrespectfully known in the title of the most recent TV series). Sad Cypress, first published in 1940, is widely regarded by Christie aficionados as one of her best. The ...  Read the complete review
