Advantages: Written by a genius its as near perfection as comics get
Disadvantages: Not one ot read if you feel easily intimidated by clever writers
Ok so reviewing a 200 page series is probably a little ambitious. To be honest the best i can do is give an overview and hope you go and read the books for yourself. The Sandman is a series that revolves around the personification of dreams Dream and his siblings the Endless. The Endless are, Destiny, Death, Dream, Desire, Despair, Destruction and Delirium. They crop up throughout the series but don't really dominate it. That said this series is about their relationships with each other, although the focus is Dream and his decline into Death. The series has a huge cast of extra characters and is set on the Earth, in Hell, in the Dreaming, in Fairy and anywhere else you can think of including under the earth. The charactres range from normal people to Norse gods and the plot lines from the story of why Shakspeare wrote the Tempest to the finding of a lost brother in a convention of serial killers. The Sandman series is full of diversity, partly due to the fact that this is a series that is meant ot be "about stories". There are masses of refrences to myhtology, literature and populr culture hidden in the text. The characters are all fully rounded some of the best being Lucifer, Thessaly, Matthew and Loki. Dream himself doesn't always appear in the series but everything eventually relates to him in some way. He ia a hamletesque figure and his death at the end is always certain. The drawing throughout the series is very good. Giamna picked his illustrators well and they are all very good. Zulli's work on the wake is trully impressive and just as Gaiman represents one of the bets writers, his illustrators represent some of the best artists I know that this is a seriously inadequate review of one of the best pieces of writing i've ever read. However it is a taster and i really cannot stress how good this series is. It is one of the most inciteful pieces of writing i've ever
read and i think it should be a must read for anyone wanting to learn about people.
