Advantages: A funny and devious story

Disadvantages: A little complicated for the younger reader

Sausages is a book by Anne Adenay and Roger Federay. It is released as part of the Hopscotch range of books that are designed to fit in with the National Literacy Strategy.

The Story
------------
This is a story set in the days when shoes were individually made by a shoe maker for the person.

The story focuses around Albert who was was a very poor man. Albert ordered his new shoes however when they were ready, he had no money to pay for them. The shoemaker allowed Albert to keep the shoes on the condition that he would not to say anything to anyone except for one word 'sausages'.

Albert's wife was initially cross with him and became worried about his mental state. After discussions with her neighbour his wife decided to fetch the Mayor who in turn visited an embarrassed Albert. The Mayor was convinced that Albert had gone mad.

The Mayor visited the Shoemaker the next day and told the shoemaker that Albert was mad. The shoemaker disagreed and made a bet of fifty coins with the Mayor, that he was not mad.

When Albert visited the shoemaker with the Mayor he began to speak normally (at the request of the shoemaker). The Mayor had lost the bet and gave the shoemaker the fifty coin wager, which paid for Alberts shoes!

My opinion
--------------
Although my six year old daughter listened and read along attentively to the story. There were some situations however which needed explaining. I felt that the end of the story was a bit complicated, despite the happy ending.

Although it is good that Albert does get his shoes you do have to feel sorry for the Mayor who was hustled out of his money.

I'm not sure if this book's moral was to teach children not to bet or was a modern day Robin Hood interpretation!

The illustrations are good throughout although the characters all have really big noses which is a little Scarey!
