The only book I have ever needed to help me with programming is " Programming with C " from the Shaum's Outline Series by Byron S. Gottfried. What makes it so good? Here's my list : it's a handy size and they have a paperback version, so it's handy to carry to labs with you. there are worked examples on every topic along with 'test yourself' examples at the end of each chapter (with answers at the back of the book) there's a comprehensive index listing all the subcategories available, so you don't just find a page for structures, but relevant pages on defining them, using them, functions that ...
