Advantages: clear style, detailed info, mainly jargon free
Disadvantages: ?????
The only book I have ever needed to help me with programming is " Programming with C " from the Shaum's Outline Series by Byron S. Gottfried. What makes it so good? Here's my list : it's a handy size and they have a paperback version, so it's handy to carry to labs with you. there are worked examples on every topic along with 'test yourself' examples at the end of each chapter (with answers at the back of the book) there's a comprehensive index listing all the subcategories available, so you don't just find a page for structures, but relevant pages on defining them, using them, functions that are available and pages with examples of use there are nifty reference tables at the back of the book which are great if you need to look up, say, the order in which certain instructions operate. it covers almost every topic you'll need explanation on - from data in and out put to structures, unions and arrays. This book may not be detailed enough for the serious programmer, but for beginners it's perfect. The style is chatty and mostly jargon-free so is simple to understand. if you have to do a short course in C as part of your degree course or job, this is the book to buy.
