Science of Discworld - Terry Pratchett, Ian Stewart and Jack Cohen:
... of Discworld" is the first of Terry Pratchett s novels to combine non-fictional scientific concepts with the fictional Discworld. The amount of research that has gone into this book is quite staggering and well presented - Pratchett has inserted his own special brand of humour among the hardcore evolutionary facts to keep it interesting reading. However, if you didn t like reading your high school ... Read the full review: Science As An Artform by Snu210 |

Genome: the Autobiography of a Species in 23 Chapters - Matt Ridley ... The Autobiography of a Species in 23 Chapters is written by Matt Ridley who received his doctorate from Oxford University. As popular science books go, it might seem from its rather dry title to be one to leave on the shelf, but it is, instead, an enjoyable introduction to the subject of genetics. Genetics is a fairly modern field and for many it must seem a mysterious and dangerous one. This book serves as a brief, but insightful introduction to the subject without ever resorting to being patronising. The preface gives the basic information about DNA and genes needed by the completely unitiated, but is short and snappy so as not to overload a complete layman wit... Where To Watch Birds in Yorkshire - John R. Mather ... Yorkshire, rolling countryside, beautiful coastline, the Dales, the edge of the Peak District... a perfect place to look for birds. And this book is one that will help you do this. Meticulously researched, this book features some of the best sites in the region to go birdwatching, with maps, a guide to the localities and terrain and, most importantly, a list of all bird species you re likely to see in those areas. Of course Yorkshire is a huge county, and this has meant that many of the sites entries are rather brief, and in my local area, I can think of many sites missing, some of which I consider better than some used. This is subjective though, and space issues h... Read the full review: Ey up, a book about birds... by leetemplar |

RSPB Handbook of British Birds - Peter Holden ... are many, many bird guides on the market, that range from the brilliant to the downright useless. While the standard text for any serious birdwatchers is the Collins Bird Guide, the crammed information and wide range of European species can be a bit bewildering, especially for newcomers. Sometimes it s good to have a book that just covers species that are likely to be seen in your own county, and British readers could do a lot worse than this one. It covers all the most common British birds, and a good few rarer ones, in great detail with one species per page, sorted by family and with easy to find sections on identification, habits, habitats, feeding, breeding, co...
