I bought this book because I like reading about real life things from ordinary people. I find it interesting to hear stories from people who aren't authors but that have something important to say. This book did exactly that. The book is well structured explaining life in the prison service in the words of this man. It starts at the beginning and ends when he loses his job. It is fascinating to read about what goes on in prisons and what is covered up so we don't hear about it. It is a very brave account, if it wasn't for men like this we wouldn't hear what really goes on. Ronnie Thompson is a man on a mission. When we think of a prison officer he doesn't want us to think of a burly meathead with a bunch of keys, he wants us to have respect for the men behind the uniform and the difficult job they do. I only know one prison officer, my cousin, who is a decent bloke who seems happy in his job so I never really had a bad impression of prison staff before I read this book. I now have the impression that not only are they meatheads but a bunch of foul mouthed alcoholics too.
