This is the first Dick Francis book I have read and I can say I don't think I will be reading anymore. I usually read horse racing books by John Francome and was recommended Dick Francis by a friend but was very disappointed. This book has very little to actually do with the horses and racing and is more about 2 weather reporters trying to chase down a hurricane. Perry Stuart is the main character and flies with his friend into the eye of a hurricane. Another op on a Dick Francis novel from me!! After just finishing ‘HOT MONEY’, I forgot that I had Harry Potter # 4 sitting there waiting for me, and so dived straight into this one. (I’ve finished it now and have become engrossed in Harry……. So panic over!!) It wasn’t until I got a good few chapters in that I realised that I was once again in the middle of a book that wasn’t the one that I wanted to read (if you know what I mean? As I’d been patiently waiting for the Potter book to come out in paperback) but any hoo……. No matter, I couldn’t put this down, and as I don’t like to have ...  Read the complete review

Having been a fan of Dick Francis novels for many years it saddens me to say I cannot find a decent word to say about the latest to come out in paperback.. Second Wind has a poor plot, feeble characters and the most unbelievable 'love interest' I think I have ever read.. Moreover anyone who has read 'The Trouble with Lazy Ethel' the definitive novel about hurricanes in my view, will hardly be stirred by Mr Francis's light breeze.. I had lost all interest in Perry Stuart - physist- BBC weatherman by chapter two.. And could have cared less if he had perished by chapter three..Indeed by chapter four I was wishing the whole cast would ...  Read the complete review

Good contemporary writer Not the best mystery writer on the go

A great character on the murder trail None

Interesting characters, light read Some plot threads not tied up well

Very fast-paced thriller with elements of the supernatural creeping in from the darkness Not enough is seen of the main villans who seem woefully underused!!!
