Advantages: funny, great writing style

Disadvantages: it ended

Imagine you have just got your wage packet. Instead of been £4000 overdrawn you are now only £3000 overdrawn. Your bank manager is constantly on the phone wanting to discuss you debt. You walk down Oxford Street and there in the window is this season’s must have an amazing scarf. you look closely to discover the best thing. For today only you can receive 10% off. Although it is still a hefty £300, you are still saving a fortune as you reach for your purse. Your heart is beating as you cannot wait to hold it in your hands. You get to the counter and there is a bargain bin. You grab a handful and bring them to the counter. You pay by plastic and rush out pleased with your purchase. You have just saved yourself £400 and decided to worry about the £600 spent later.

For Rebecca Bloomwood the main character, this is just a typical lunch break. She is constantly shopping buying everything from clothes to accessories. If she sees something she likes she buys it. She may never find time to wear it, it is just about the pure excitement when purchasing. She cannot go past a shop without buying at least one item and as she lives in London and walks past Oxford street on a daily basis she is in big debts. In London you could expect this the only trouble is Rebecca’s job. She is a financial journalist and spends her working life telling others how to keep in control of their money.

Rebecca lives in her own little dream world. She is convinced she is going to win the lottery and end up with lots of money and with a perfect man. This book also let’s us into her love life although it is mostly non existence there is some fun and laughter on the way.

I enjoyed the way this book was wrote following a format of small chapters and letters. Most of the letters are informing her of her ever increasing debts but no need to worry about those, she can just put them in a drawer and hope they disappear. It is very easy to follow and didn’t
take me too long to read. I laughed out loud a few times and once opened I was addicted.

Sophie Kinsella explains Rebecca’s character very well. I think all shopaholics can relate to his book and some things will remind you of yourself.

If you are female, like shopping and want to read a book that keeps your excitement from start to finish then this is the one for you. It is Sophie Kinsella’s first book and after reading this in January I couldn’t wait until her next.

Sophie Kinsella’s new book “Shopaholic Abroad” (sequel to the above) came out last week. Yes, I have read it already and watch this space for my opinion on it.
