Advantages: gripping

Disadvantages: none

The story of a boy who leaves his native California and his gas-station owner parents to study at an ivy-league type college in New England. His specialism is Classics, his fellow students a close knit group from priviledged backgrounds, and he takes a while to find his feet. The further he is accepted into their clique, the more he finds out about the real - increasingly ugly - dynamics of the group. One mad night culminates in a dreadful deed, which is then covered up by more, and the group begins to self-destruct.

A fantastic read, one of the few books I own I that stands up to repeat readings. It grips to the end, the characters drawn clearly, although dreadful precocious for the 18-21 yr olds they are meant to be. Recommended for a long holiday where you can indulge uninterrupted!!
