 ... because you can't get into a rhythm with it, it just seems slow and boring to read. Even the ending which I think is meant to be the climax where there is a whole seahorse family waiting for you, does not raise my excitement levels when reading this book. But then again, I suppose it's meant to have a dreamy watery type feel to it as it is actually set under water. It's only recently that my daughter has taken an interest in this book (she's nearly 3), but it's not because of the story, but I will explain about that ...more

This is a book which came in one of my eldest daughter's Bookstart packs, I think she was about 18 months at the time. The book is a small board book with 22 pages of story, written by Stella Blackstone and illustrated by Clare Beaton. It is published by Barefoot books, information can be found at www.barefootbooks.com. The book is called Secret Seahorse and is about a little seahorse who is swimming through the ocean and the various creatures he meets on the way. ***Background*** Stella Blackstone is well known for her Bear series including Bear On A Bike, which has featured as a storybook in a few Cbeebies shows such as Tweenies. Her books are full of clever rhymes that tell lovely stories. Clare Beaton is responsible for the illustrations in this book although they aren't sketched or painted as in most children's books. They are made up of many different materials, sequins and buttons.
