This is the second book in a trilogy of thrillers about the Victorian underground and three young friends named Sally, Frederick and Jim. Each book follows the same formulae: several mysteries, unsolved crimes and strange occurrences, linking together to finally form one single case. It is written in third person from the point of view of all the characters, however unimportant or inconsistent they are in the story. By using this method Pullman is able to follow the “baddies” actions without giving away their true identities and intentions.
