Good read. As the first reviewer said, the book is divided into 3 sections. This actually disappointed me because it was only the first section that was really about life in the workhouse. The other sections were very interesting and well written, but not about the workhouse.

This book is the follow up to Call The Midwife by Jennifer worth and she writes about the lives of people she encounters in her work as a nurse and midwife based in a convent in the East End of London in the 1950s. The book is split into three main sections. The first section tells the story of Frank and Peggy. They were sent to the workhouse when they were orphaned and they were separated. Frank is released from the workhouse to work as a fishmonger and sets to prove himself as a worthy guardian of his younger sister.
