Advantages: A gripping insight into the life of one of this countries unsung heroes

Disadvantages: none

In this book Gaz Hunter takes on a journey of a lifetime with the SAS, unlike other books written by former members of the Regiment, the author grew up with the SAS as his dad was in the SAS and had risen through the ranks to become a major. Gaz describes what it was like growing up with his dad away on operations, the first time he saw his dad was when he was 2 years old, his dad returned from a mission and the author and his elder brother shot at this stranger with their toy guns. After his early life in Hereford he had a few jobs then when he felt he was getting anywhere he joined the Army. He describes his training in the Royal Green Jackets Regiment and saw active service in Northern Island and was also posted to Belize and Gibraltar, before joining the SAS.

After passing selection into the Regiment he served in Northern Island again, counter terrorist operations, rescuing hostages in Sierra Leonne, training the Columbian police to tackle the drugs barrens and advised the Americans on the Siege at Wacko.

Besides all the military action Gaz also describes the personal side of his life openaly and honestly, he describes his marriage and how his first son had Downs Syndrome, the birth of his daughter and the tragic death of his second son. His divorce from his wife and subsequent broken relationships.

The author's style of writing is humorous and compelling, real page turner it is 338 pages long and has 2 sections of photographs. I have read numerous books written by former members of the Regiment and think this is the best. The author is not boastful or self promoting like some of the other writers can be. I would recommend this book if you like military action books.

Summary: A very good book, wonderfully written
