Julie?s father Dan is, to use a slangy parlance, a bit bonkers. He calls her Sissy, for one, but that?s not the worst of it. He prefers to live his life lying on the sofa, watching wall to wall M*A*S*H, with a ?lung full of Agent Orange? he brought back from Vietnam, and hawking into his hand and slinging it at the wall if no-one?s around to wait on him with tissues. He is certified as having sanity problems, which got him invalided out of ?Nam. But he?s not the problem relative Julie has to report on in this autobiography. Nor is it her maternal grandma, who would take Julie fishing, stopping off on the way home to point Jesus Himself wandering the ... Read the complete review

Julie Gregory is no ordinary little girl. She always seems to be ill but years of trips to doctors' surgeries and hospital tests bring her family no closer to what?s wrong with her. Mom looks after her. She tells Julie what to say to the doctors ('Show how sick you are') and if Julie doesn?t do as she?s told, she gets a little slap here, a big twist of her hair there. Dad?s a slob, he comes home from work and doesn?t move from the tv for the rest of the evening, getting Julie to run and bring him snacks and drinks while he flicks the remote ?til he finds his favourite re-run of M*A*S*H. Oh, ... Read the complete review

This is a very powerful book that tackles a very hidden illness called Munchausen by Proxy. It is about a girl called Juile Gregory who from as early as she can remember spent her life in and out of hospitals, being put through all sorts of tests, having x-rays done and having numerous amounts of medication given to her. To most people it would sound like Julie is very sick. However, it is Julies Mother that is the one that is ill. Her mother puts her through all of this pain and suffering at the hands of Doctors because she has Munchausens by Proxy which is a condition where a mother will inflict or make up that their child has something wrong with them so ... My husband was telling me he'd been reviewing some books this week on Dooyoo, and it reminded me about a book I had wanted to review for a little while. It's called Sickened and it tells the autobiographical story of a woman called Julia Gregory. You can purchase it for £6.99 if you would like to buy a copy, and Amazon have it on sale for £5.24. I found this book both interesting and disturbing from start to finish. Julie, the author, takes us on a journey through her childhood. It is apparant from the outset that Julie's Mother and Grandmother suffer from Munchausen By Proxy. The real trouble with Munchausen By Proxy is that it is not really Julie's ... Julie Gregory grew up in a life so different from any other and this book is her childhood, documented for everyone to read. A lost Childhood. When I got this book I thought it would be a typical story of the horrors that some people go through with their parents. It had me gripped from the very first page, and in places I was crying, I'm not sure if it was with Julie or for Julie. Julie was a very sickly child, always suffering from migraines and sore throats, going from doctor to doctor her mother was adamant that she'd find a doctor who knew the answers. If the doctor thought nothing was wrong it was Julie who was blamed, maybe she hadnt shown ... Read the complete review
