Simply Divine - Wendy Holden

Description: ISBN 0755329732 / Author: Wendy Holden / Genre: Fiction / Twentysomething, magazine journalist Jane has enough stress--breaking up with ... more
Simply Divine - Wendy Holden ... her boyfriend, falling in love with a man who leaves the country the next morning and the spare tyre around her waist--without the added headache of the glamorous socialite Champagne D'Vyne, who pops effervescently into her life and proceeds to sour everything as their lives become inextricably intertwined. Meanwhile, her best friend Tally's crumbling ancestral mansion in Lower Bulge is about to be sold off unless Jane can find a rich knight to come to Tally's rescue and, while she's at it, nab one for herself. The reader is launched into the world of double-barrelled socialites like the Front-Bottomes and Uppe-Timmselves, and the offices of the Gorgeous and Fabulous magazine worlds where only girls with slim calves and tinted bikini lines get onto the front covers.

... herself.I won't give too much away, but as with most of Holdens books there is a twist nearing the end. I must say it isn't her best work to date.Having said that, some of the typically Holden vocabulary used within, gave me a good giggle. It isn't a book I enjoyed reading in bed,but its ideal for train rides or buses. I found "The Wives of Bath" and "Fame Fatale" much more a pleasant, girly read. Some may enjoy it but having read her other books prior to this one I lost the enthusiasm which ...more

So Wendy Holden decided to write a chick lit novel. How did she go about it, what did she come up with and put into her book to get the readersīattention and satisfy their expectations? I imagine it like this: SETTING Deffo London! Nether-Piddleton-on-the-Marshes just isnīt the right setting for this kind of literature, firstly because many of the target readers live in London and the ones who donīt would like to, secondly because name dropping applies also to places and the Savoy sounds better than the Hare and Hounds, thirdly readers have always liked to recognise places and thanks to the media they know their way around London better than around ...  Read the complete review

I must admit that I’ve been caught out being particularly disorganised - I forgot to check that the product I’d reviewed actually had a category on the site before I planned to post it yesterday! So instead, I thought I should try to finish this book review that’s been giving me some trouble in polishing off. Apologies first off, then, if this isn’t up to my usual standard (I have standards? Woho!! :o) !), but this isn’t my usual type of reading matter. That Simply Divine isn’t my usual choice of book is, I feel, a particularly important point to mention, as it does affect my perceptions: some people love the frothy ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Simply Divine - Wendy Holden: Simple but not quite divine... (841 words)

pLoT sUmMaRy..... In typical chick - lit style, Jane is a journalist for a glossy magazine with an ordinary life. Stress at work, in her love life as well as desperately trying to shed that extra bit of weight puts her at complete odds with the woman she has to write about: Champagne D'Vyne. Champagne is a socialite that lives an unbelievable lifestyle full of rich men, parties and glamorous photo shoots. Champagne's increasingly demanding attitude soon starts to grate on Jane as she realises that Champagne will not let anything - least of all Jane - get in her way. rEvIeW.... On the surface, this book has nothing ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Simply Divine? Not sure I'd go that far but it's pretty good (438 words)

The Plot Jane is a career-minded journalist who works on a high-profile magazine in London. First of all, she is working for "Gorgeous", but later is poatched by their rival "Fabulous". She finds herself working with "It" girl Champagne d'Vyne, whose column she ends up writing on a regular basis. Getting the necessary information out of Champagne is not as easy as Jane first assumes as she has a hectic life of partying and chasing men. In the midst of all of this, Jane meets Tom, who lives in the flat above hers. After a one-night stand, he leaves for New York, leaving no way for her to contact him. Alongside the Jane-Champagne ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Simply Divine - Wendy Holden: Simply Divine Dahling (886 words)

'Just got back from shooting,' honked Champagne 'With the Sisse-Pooles in Scotland, Bloody awful.' 'Oh I hate blood sports too,' agreed Jane. 'Hideously cruel,' Champagne agreed, much to Jane's surprise. 'Making people stagger over the moors in the peeing rain wearing clothes the colour of snot is absolutely the worst, the most inhumane thing you can do to anyone' I love this book! Every paragraph and conversation is light, funny and captures the characters personalities perfectly. I 'honked' at every page! + Setting + The book is set in London with a few visits to a country mansion called 'Mullions' which is almost what its ...  Read the complete review
