Batman: Year One - Frank Miller

Premium Review Behind the Hood: The Early Years (306 words)
by Matt B - written on 17/01/01 (Very useful, 101 readings)
Rating:

Batman: Year One is Frank Miller's tale of Batman's first days under the hood. It is a very different Batman than many have become accustomed to - in this story, Batman makes mistakes, and you'll also find no supervillains - the crime that Bats fights in this story is the corruption within the Gotham police department, various pimps and thugs, and the Gotham Mafia. But Year One is not solely the story of Batman's first adventures - it also chronicles the story of James Gordon, who gets transferred to Gotham City, a while before becoming the Commissioner we know and love today. Gordon has to fight the corruption he finds in every officer around him, and ...

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Frank Miller

Premium Review The Comic That Launched A Thousand Clones (437 words)
by Matt B - written on 11/01/01 (Very useful, 40 readings)
Rating:

In 1987, DC Comics released a four issue miniseries entitled ‘The Dark Knight Returns’. The style of the comic, which was both written and drawn by Frank Miller, had a very dark and violent feel to it, both in artwork and character. This style, which became known as ‘grim and gritty’, influenced the majority of comics in the late eighties and early nineties. Only in recent years have the major comics companies started releasing material not obviously influenced by Miller’s work. The work itself is a masterpiece. Miller’s artwork seems strange at first; he definitely has a distinctive style around him that cannot be seen elsewhere, ...

Frank Miller presents a dark future for Gotham, somehow darker than the Gotham of present. Batman is at his most driven and violent and Gotham's crime is rapidly destroying the city. The artwork is excellent, always evoking the correct mood throughout and driving the story on. The plotting is intelligent, ...
