Skipping Christmas - John Grisham ... festive season, and the result is Skipping Christmas, a modest but funny novel about the tyranny of December 25.

... festive season where in full swing. A highly organised and proud neighbourhood where putting all their lights, frosties and decorations out for the world to see. As the road seeks to win the award for the best festive decorations in the area. Only one house has none and one house has let the neighbourhood down. My thoughts on the book: This is the third novel by this author that I have reviewed. And as such I really wasn't sure what to expect this time round. I liked the concept of a couple trying to do something ...more

Premium Review Skipping Christmas - John Grisham: Fabulously funny look at the holiday season. (476 words)
by - written on 22/02/09 (Very useful, 62 readings)
Rating:

'Luther unfolded a spreadsheet and began pointing. "Here, my dear, is what we spent last Christmas. Six thousand, one hundred dollars. And precious little to show for it. The vast majority of it down the drain. Wasted. And that, of course, does not include my time, your time, the traffic, stress, worry, bickering, ill-will, sleep loss - all the wonderful things that we pour into the holiday season." You're telling me this is from a John Grisham novel? THE John Grisham? Master of the 'egde-of-your-seat-fast-paced-courtroom-drama'? THAT John Grisham? Unbelievable you might say, but it is. Skipping Christmas is indeed a far cry from the likes ...  Read the complete review

Luther Krank is facing up to yet another festive season but this time he is determined it will be different. Last year he spent $6100 over the festive period which really goes against his accounting background. His wife Nora is quite into the traditional Christmas but with his daughter Blair being abroad for the first time Luther is hoping that he will be able to convince his wife to take a cruise on the Island Princess. He knows that it will not be easy but at half the cost of last Christmas the dream holiday seems too good to be true. He then hits on the idea of Skipping Christmas altogether, no tree, presents, carol singers or even Frosty the snowman. The ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Skipping Christmas - John Grisham: You can't get away from Christmas!! (955 words)

Background: I found this book while wondering aimlessly round the local charity shop. I am not a fan of John Grisham as the books I have read so far by this author have disappointed me. I thought I would try this one though as it sounded different to me. About the author: John Grisham was born in Arkansas in USA on February 8th 1955. Before becoming a writer he worked in a law practice, and this is quite often a theme in some of his bestselling novels. So far he has written 21 successful books of which I am reviewing his 13th, which was written in 2001. Synopsis of the book: Following the departure of ...  Read the complete review

This year, Luther Krank has decided that he and his wife Nora are going to skip Christmas.Think about it…no last minute racing around overcrowded shopping malls, running up debts on their credit cards. No boring office parties, no forced smiles as they unwrap yet another unwanted gift, no wondering whom they’ve offended by leaving them off their Christmas card list, no tacky decorations adorning their lounge, no garish strings of lights criss-crossing their window. Theirs will be the only house in the street with no Frosty the Snowman on the roof. Quite simply, they are cancelling Christmas and going on a wonderful Caribbean cruise, away from all the ...  Read the complete review
