I'm not a big book reader, I tend not to have the time to sit down and read fr any length of time however this one was recommended to me by the boyfriend after he had finished it. There is some debate over whether this is in fact a true story or the impression created that it is was just part of the marketing hype but either way it is a cracking read. The story is set in the present but is also told through a series of flash backs following the violent shooting of an off duty security gaurd in a Hells Kitchen diner one night by two members of a violent Irish gang. It seems an unprovoked random killing however there is a very direct link to the past and in ... Read the complete review

I've seen the movie many times, and thought id give the book a try. Because my experience tells me that movies which were based on a book; usually have parts edited quite heavily. I found this book a real gripping read, captivating. I read the book in about 4 days and found it was much better than the movie itself - the way the author describes the brutality and the scenes - just simply amazing. The story itself if a journey of 4 boys in New York's Hells Kitchen; they are the best of friends. The journey of them first planning a prank and then ending up trying to survive in the Wilkinson Home for Boys. Their living nightmare begins. ... Read the complete review

I have not actually seen the movie Sleepers, but have had the book floating around my house for some time. It was given by a friend of a sibling, as a gift. Needing new reading material I thought I would give this a go. -----The book----- Sleepers is a true account of what happened to 4 young boys when they were sent to a reformatory school after playing a prank that went wrong. These were 4 boys that were the best of friends and had grown up together in a violent neighbourhood in New York. They found escapism and laughter in each others company and managed to ignore and forget the problems at home of poverty and domestic violence when ... Read the complete review

The first thing that appears evident about Sleepers is that it is a true story. This is determined from observation of the front. Turning to the back of the novel will then give you a taste of what this remarkable, compelling story is about. Lorenzo Carcaterra is a journalist-turned-writer. He is author of such books as ?Street Boys? and ?a safe place?. All of which, including Sleepers are based on true encounters and experiences. The fact that Sleepers is a true story makes it all that more interesting and remarkable. Before explaining the concept of the novel, I believe it would be beneficial to touch on the title- ?Sleepers?. The term is ... Read the complete review

The book Sleepers is an exact copy of the film, it is true story and very horrific at parts underlying systematic physical and sexual abuse condemned to four friends who are sent to a boys prison called the Wilkinson home for boys after a prank goes horribly wrong. It is to change their young lives and after their twelve months at the home, their lives will never ever be the same. Lorenzo, Michael, john and Tommy were best friends and hung out together and lived near by in the deprived part of New York. The Wilkinson Home for boys changes their lives in the worst possible way it can, they are subjected to violent ... Read the complete review
