I think this is enough information for young children, who usually don't understand all the reasons as to why they had to go to Bethlehem. When Jesus is born, there is a delightful picture of Mary putting him in the manger, and children like the fact that she calls him "Sleepy Jesus"- they realise that it's the title of the book.

Sleepy Jesus A lovely Christmas story for young children. Even the front cover is appealing with Jesus lying in a manger and farm animals gazing into the straw filled manger. Before we even start the story there is a double page spread of a star filled night sky. Little Miss likes this page, and it gives us an idea that it's going to be a bit of a magical book. The very first page starts with a double page spread showing the shepherds looking in wonder at the sky, and the words "It was Christmas Eve. God was very busy."
