Advantages: enchantingly amusing
Disadvantages: You won't want your children to grow out of it
Just how much trouble can a cat and a rainbow lorikeet cause when left home alone? Well, if the cat in question is Lynley Dodd's Slinky Malinki, and the lorikeet is his accomplice Stickybeak Syd, who knows? (Actually, my son knows; he memorised this story at a very young age, and wowed fellow travellers on an Intercity train to london by reciting the story whilst "reading" the book - even turning the pages at the correct time - at the tender age of 2 1/2!) Another beautifully written and illustrated book from the mind of Lynley Dodd, "Slinky Malinki, Open The Door" manages to capture the imaginations of every child who reads or hears the story. Slinky Malinki is one of those clever cats that seem to pop up regularly on "Home Video" shows: he can jump high onto the door handle and open it. This sleek, sly cat lets Stickybeak Syd into just about every room in the house and, between the two of them, hardly a speck of dust is left standing! They shred shirts in the bedroom, tangle towels in the bathroom, bowl down the stairs inside a roll of carpet, scatter stationery in the office, climb curtains in the lounge, and empty the contents of the cupboards in the kitchen. Hearing a scratching noise from outside, "Slinky Malinki jumped high off the floor, he swung on the handle and opened the door..." And here comes the twist so often found in Lynley Dodds' stories: Waiting outside the door is that horrible hound Hairy Maclary! Written in the inimitable style of rhyme that prevails in these stories, "Slinky Malinki Open the Door" is one of those books that you couldn't possibly pass on to a friend... because you enjoy reading it too much to your own children!
