According to Pratchett, when he wrote Small Gods, he never meant to make any great religious or philosophical statements. That's fairly surprising, because I've seen Small Godfs recommended a few times to help folk get their minds around big religious issues (in fact I've passed it on that way myself). While Small Gods is part of the ... Read the complete review

Terry Pratchett has written a lot of good books. When my teenage self ran out of Doctor Who novelisations, it was Pratchett's Discworld series that maintained my terrifying reading rate until I was old enough to appreciate all the pop culture and drugs references in the Doctor Who New Adventures. But of all the Discworld novels, ... Read the complete review

"Small Gods" is most assuredly a parody of other sci-fi/fantasy books, just as the rest of the Discworld books have been. But it is so much more than that. It really does stand on its own as a perfect satire of religion, and what it means to be religious (or more simply put, to believe). I fancied myself a fan of Terry's previous ... The most self-contained and the cleverest of all Discworld novels. It stands alone as being the least part of 'series'. In fact if Discworld continuity is anything to go by, it took place at least 100 years before most of the other books. By the time Omnians make it to Ank Morpork in later books, they are post Brutha, are ... Read the complete review

Terry Pratchett at his funniest. This is up there with Pyramids! You'll laugh, you'll cry (from laughing.) Imagine the least majestic creature you can and then imagne that the god of a religeon you alone believe in, turns up in that form. It's comical, it's ironic and it's animal friendly. The concept of a tortoise on it's ... Read the complete review

I know that a lot of people will be shocked and angry but............. I really did not enjoy this book! I started reading Terry Pratchett books on holiday this year and I took this along and read it 3rd which was probably just as well because if I had read it first I would have stopped with just this one and that would have been ... "What gods need is belief, and what humans want is gods." This is why the Church of the Great God Om is all-powerful and why Om is somewhere up a brown river. Humans want gods but they don't necessarily believe in them - it's the difference between wanting a church wedding and actually going to church. Om started out as ... Read the complete review

I started to read the Discworld novels about three months ago and I am now an addict. The facinating thing about the novels is that the author manages to combine two of the greatest aspects of books into one. Of course I am refering to Comedy and Adventure. From the moment I picked up Small Gods I couldn't put it down. The book itself is ... Read the complete review

Although I would consider this book as one of my favourite in the Discworld series it hasn't got the many very funny witticisms that usually accompany his books. In The Thief of Time I criticised this as one of it's shortcomings, but in Small Gods there are enough moments to make you laugh while at the same time having an engaging plot. ... As in Terry Pratchetts own words , "occasionally he is accused of literature" , Pratchett would be put away for solitary confinment for this book. Deviating from the usual theme of his previous books in the Discworld series that focused more on one location in the fictional world , " Ankh Morpork " , Pratchett takes us to ... This was my first experience reading a Terry Pratchett novel, as well as my first introduction to the 'Discworld'... and I was impressed! Small Gods has a bit of everything - it's full of imagination, philosophy, satire, and gets down right funny at times! The story centers around Brutha, a religious novice in Omnia, who is ... One of the rare Discworld books which doesn’t fit into a subset. Some say it fits into a series about gods that includes Hogfather, and Pyramids. I personally disagree with this a Hogfather is a death book and two books don’t really make a subseries. It’s also a bit of a tenuous link. Enough rambling about nothing and now onto ... Follow Brutha, would-be prophet and only believer in a god a whole civilisation is supposed to be worshipping. It seems everyone is going through the motions and doesn't really believe in the Great God Om, and since the strength of a god is based solely on the strength and especially number of his worshippers the poor little guy is currently ... Terry Pratchett's 13th Discworld novel, "Small Gods" makes for a change in that it uses characters that don't reappear in later books. A few things that happen are mentioned in "Carpe Jugulum", but that's it. Anyway, you have the great religion of Om. You know Om? The powerful god? The one who can change ... Read the complete review
