Advantages: Nice illustrations & pop-ups. Some good messages.
Disadvantages: Not that educational (compared to other Snappy titles).
Having recently reviewed 'Snappy Little Numbers'....I now bring you....(drumroll)...'Snappy Little Monsters'...!
As with the other books in the series, this book is hardback & features bright, colourful fun characters in the form of pop-ups across the centre of each 2 page spread, along with some short rhymes which are simple & written clearly in large writing for young readers. Although most books in the series have an educational slant (such as counting, or learning shapes & colours), this book is more fun & quirky than educational, but does have a bit of an emphasis on family life & tries to convey some positive messages.
One example is a picture of a monster with a toothbrush & toothpaste & the rhyme:
This monster only has one tooth.
Count up & you will see!
She'll never rush with her toothbrush -
She's careful as can be.
And the final pages (in an effort to get youngsters to bed!) feature a baby monster in bed with her snappy little monsters book:
Now it's monster bedtime
So shut the book up tight.
The monsters will be waiting still
For you tomorrow night!
I have a few of the books from the Snappy Pop-Ups series, & this is probably my least favourite. I find the other titles much more educational & purposeful. Some children may also be a bit scared of the monsters!
I did buy this book from The Works though, for a mere £2.99 (RRP £7.99), so it was still a good buy to place on the bookshelf alongside the other titles I have. Probably the reason this particular title ended up on sale in The Works is that most people prefer the other titles over this one...? I do recommend this series of books - but perhaps try some of the other titles first...
Summary: One for the collection....!

- 05/08/09 My son is a bit young to judge his reactions to it (only 5.5 months!). I do love buying him books & filling up his bookshelves in advance though! I do read the books to him, & he does stare quite intently at the colourful pictures, if that's any help!! :) |

- 05/08/09 A good summary of the book, but I think with a children's book review, it's more useful if you also include the child's reaction to it. |
