When Detectives Gino and Magozzi attend a snowman-making competition in wintry Minnesota, the last thing they are expecting to find is a dead body. Yet this is precisely what they do find - inside one of the snowmen. And not just one body, but two! Even worse, the bodies are soon identified as cops. Then a probation officer goes missing. By the time his body has been found, also in a snowman, his killer is loose and heading for his ex-wife, whom he used to beat on a regular basis. The ex-wife is apparently safe - living in a secure compound where all visitors, especially men, are carefully monitored - but Gino and Magozzi, along with Sheriff Iris Rikker, want to make ... Is it just me or does anyone else who reads these books think that if the MonkeeWrench crew spray-painted their Trailer van in day-glo paint and travelled around with a talking dog then they'd bear just the ever-so-slightest remblence to the Mystery Gang from Scooby Doo....? No, just me then... Thankfully, MonkeeWrench play a smaller but no less significant role in this newest novel from successful crime-writing mother and daughter duo, P.J.Tracy. Detectives Gino and Magozzi, one of those life-long partnerships in the tradition of Murtaugh and Riggs, Batman and Robin, Scooby and Scrappy Doo (okay forget those last two) are attending a charity snowman building ... When I first read P.J. Tracy’s Want to Play a few years ago I decided that I really liked this mother/daughter writing duo. However, the next few books were to be quite disappointing and when Snow Blind was released I wasn’t too bothered about reading it. Still, I was browsing amazon one day and this book came up at a very reasonable price so I decided to give it another go. Snow Blind is the fourth book in the series about the Monkeewrench team and the Minneapolis PD team Gino and Magozzi. Unlike the other books, focus is mainly on the two detectives rather than the four odd characters that make up Monkeewrench. It all starts during a snowman building contest ... PJ Tracy, what have you done? I have been addicted to the writing of this mother-and-daugher team ever since I read Want to Play? and was looking forward to reading this book. Sadly, it didn't live up to my expectations. Previous books by them have been witty, thrilling and impossible to put down. The time spent building up the four Monkeewrench characters has been ignored in this novel, as the crew make only token appearances. Having said all that, I did find it hard to put down, and read it in three days. Ruth is possibly their new star character, and comes across rather like Tempe Brennan in the Kathy Reichs novels. She doesn't live up to Grace and the other ... Read the complete review

Detectives Magozzi and Rolseth are back in their fight against Minneapolis crime. This time they have a couple of dead policemen, stacked inside snowmen to contend with. The county is experiencing its worst blizzard for many years and the detectives are called out to a remote part of the country - Dundas County - by the brand new sheriff, Iris Rikker. She has another snowman and they want to explore the links but things turn up that no one expected or particularly wanted to come to light. Sometimes secrets are better off buried in snowmen! I was so pleased to finally be able to read this book. I had read the previous three books - Want to Play, Live Bait and ... Read the complete review

The Days of Glory - Brian M. Stableford
Straightforward space opera tale quirkily executed, interesting written format allows a large cast of characters to be defined purposefully, reasonably well-realised, if rather unconvincing, galactic civilisation.
Lack of any real ideas at the heart of the bookover-reliance on violence to further the story (although, of course, this is a book about a war!)barely above average pulp science fiction.
