Advantages: Excellently written

Disadvantages: None

Noah picked this one up when we went to the library the other day and I didn't hesitate to bring it home with us because I vaguely remembered seeing it in the Dooyoo catalogue (Not that I'm addicted or anything!).

The story is written by the well known children's author Jez Alborough and was first published in 2003 by Walker Books Ltd.

The story is about a little, friendly looking dog called Sid who feels extremely happy on walking to school one day that he discovers he can fly. When he gets to school he is obviously very eager to tell all of his friends and the teacher but they don't believe him and tell him off for lying. He eventually decides to prove it to them but unfortunately he feels so sad at being accused of being a liar he can't conjure up the happy feeling that enabled him to fly previously in the story. Sid goes home a very unhappy puppy until he has a chat with his dad who reveals to him that some dogs do.

The text throughout the story rhymes and you almost find yourself chanting through the words. The whole story has a nice 'roll off the tongue' feel to it and you can, most of the time guess what word is about to come next. The words are written in a bubble text which is one of my favourites and I always used to use that font in my college days much to the discust of my lecturers.

The illustrations are really nice and on each page they are framed by a cream outer. The colours are vibrant and it is obviousl that they are painted instead of drawn. The dogs have a real soft look to them and in no way look at all threatening which is ice considering some children's books seem to set out to be scary.

I really enjoyed this story and it seem to be the right length for both Noah and I. The story did a good job at making you feel a little sorry for Sid when his friends didn't believe what he could do and you almost felt like trying to tell them yourself. I liked the fact that his father really came a longside Sid and showed him that he wasn't going mad but that the trend of flying ran in the family.

Noah seem to enjoy the story but he didn't ask for me to read it again until the following day. He enjoyed studying the pictures and we gave names to all of Sid's friends. Whenever we get to the page where Sid is upset, Noah always says 'Ahhhhhh' which is quite sweet.

Over all we enjoyed this story and I particularly loved chanting it throughout and putting a lot of enthusiasm into making it fun for Noah. I would recommend it especially if you little one is into dogs.

Summary: A great book for young children.
