Advantages: Bright, Colourful, Flows Well, Simple
Disadvantages: None
Some Dogs Do is a gorgeous picture book by Jez Alborough. I already knew Jez Alborough from his Duck in the Truck books which the grandson loves, so I was keen to give this a go when we were given it in a bag of books from a neighbour (we like to swap them in the street, keeps costs down!). If you want to buy this, you can get it from Amazon for £4.49 though the RRP is £5.99. I think that's a lot, but it's perfectly normal where the prices of kid's books are concerned in fairness.
The first thing that stands out about this book is how big and bright the glossy front cover is. The super attractive cover is bound to appeal to most little ones. Inside, there are big, bright pictures on every page. The story is written in a simple rhyme, with just one simple sentence per page. So this book is suitable for children from a very young age as they can enjoy this as a rhyming experience and appreciate the pictures. As they get older, they'll also start to understand and enjoy the story.
Most dogs don't fly of course, and when the dog in this book does - his friends all think he's nuts! But then his Dad lets him in on a little secret, most dogs don't fly - but some dogs do. It's a really simple story that's easy for children from as young as two or three years old to follow and understand in a basic manner.
I like the way the text flows so smoothly as it means that children who can't understand that story will still enjoy listening. The grandson is four and struggles with comprehension in general, but it doesn't matter with this book as he can enjoy just listening to the words flowing and draw his own interpretation by following the pictures.
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for new books to share with a preschooler. It's a lovely big format that would suit use in playgroup settings or for sharing with a group of siblings.
Summary: Highly Recommended
